The SSAT and ISEE entrance exams can cause high stress and anxiety for students. The pressure to succeed increases each year as the target scores get higher and the competition grows. Properly preparing for these private school entrance exams is on on the rise. “Front loading” and “tutoring for the test” has become the new norm. However, when a student is overly stressed and pressured, their performance suffers. Research has shown that students who are stressed and anxious perform worse than those students who were calm and confident. In order to combat the stress and anxiety these tests create, students can learn tools and techniques to calm themselves. These workshops were created to provide students with study skills and mindfulness tools to manage stress, increase focus and attention, and boost confidence.

Mindful moments

In this introductory workshop, participants will explore the basic tools to develop a mindfulness practice.  Participants will explore various mindfulness techniques including what it truly means to be mindful and pay attention to the present moment in a nonjudgemental and open manner.  Participants will learn simple breathing techniques, sitting meditations and other tools to experience being fully present.  

 

iMAGINATION AND VISUALIZATION

Let’s learn to be mindful and rediscover the world around us. Let’s sit still and reconnect with our five senses. Let’s explore the art of expressive and descriptive writing. Let’s eliminate our inhibitions, let our imagination fly freely and soar to discover endless opportunities to create… and let’s write about it!!!

During this creative workshop we will be learning how to be more mindful in our everyday life. We will be exploring mindfulness techniques, visualization, descriptive writing, journaling, and writing skills.  We will be participating in lessons aimed to teach technique as well as lessons to teach mindfulness and creative art activities. We will be using sensory integration activities as well as art projects to inspire our imagination, brainstorm, draw, create, express and ultimately write!

DISCOVERING THE MAGIC OF WORDS

The power of the pen is a tool that is often overlooked in our fast paced world. There is no time to slow down and really discover the magic of words. We are so busy and over scheduled that journaling has become an ancient craft. Let’s rediscover the art of expressive writing and poetry. Let’s sit still and reconnect with our five senses.  Let’s be mindful and really see the world around us. Participants will be participating in academic lessons aimed to teach writing technique as well as creative art activities. We will be using sensory integration activities as well as art projects to inspire our imagination, brainstorm, draw, create, express and ultimately write!

Cultivating positivity

What we choose to focus on is crucial to how we experience the world around us.  Cultivating positivity takes work but the rewards are bountiful.  In this workshop, we will learn how our brain processes negative and positive experiences.  We will also learn techniques and practice ways to focus on the positive in order to reduce stress and cultivate positivity.  

 

Mindfulness and kindfulness

During this creative workshop we will be learning how to be more mindful in our everyday life specifically focusing on our interactions with others and with ourselves. We will be exploring what it means to be mindful and "kindful" and what it means to have empathy towards others and with ourselves.  Participants will be shown various random acts of kindness videos as well as explore the profound impact a kind gesture has on people. The children will have an opportunity to write and create throughout the day.  They will be participating in lessons to teach mindfulness, empathy and promote kindness.  They will also be using their imagination to take part in creative art activities.
